Carrying black and white signs, adorned with pink triangles, members of San Francisco's lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community took to the streets hours before Christmas Eve to say that "Black Lives Matter."
The protest briefly blocked U.S. Highway 101 at Octavia Boulevard, as nearly 100 protesters came out, chanting and holding signs that read, "Silence = Violence."
San Francisco police followed closely, both on foot and on Twitter, noting the "peaceful march" at one point was making its way down Market Street heading toward Dolores Street and into the Castro District.
As many others have around the country, the protesters are acting in response to the killings of Michael Brown, 18, who was killed by a white police officer in Ferguson, Missouri, and Eric Garner, who was put into a deathly chokehold by a white police officer in Staten Island, New York.
Neither officer was held criminally responsible for the deaths of the black men. And protesters have been demanding accountability and transparency for police and an end to institutional racism across the nation.
On Tuesday night, another black teenager, Antonio Martin, was killed by police, this time in Berkeley, Missouri, near Ferguson. Police say the 18-year-old drew a handgun before the officer opened fire.
